Unveiling the replica of the Norwood Helm

------------------

A ceremony to unveil the replica of the Norwood Helm was held in St Peter's Church on Thursday 16th June 2011. This was in the presence of the High Sheriff of Kent and the Chairman of Kent County Council.

The Funerary Helm of Manasses Norwood, who lived at Dane Court, St Peter's, was displayed in this Church from his death until it was stolen in 1992. The top of his tomb can be seen in the north-west corner of the Church. The wording translates as "Here is laid Manasses Norwood of Dane Court, who at the age of 70 piously fell asleep in Christ on 12 March, in the year of human salvation 1636". The Helm forms part of the armorial achievement, or coat of arms, of the Town of Broadstairs and St Peter's.

We were very pleased to have with us Mr.Ken Norwood, a descendent of Manasses Norwood, who had one of their Coats of Arms with him, the motto translates as "Under the Cross I will Conquer". The Helm is important not just for its own sake, but also because it now forms part of the Town Coat of Arms. It should be on the Mayor's Gold Chain...but for some reason is missing! St Peter's Village Tour suggested having a replica made, and this idea received widespread support.
